Everybody loves a baby animal and Westie puppies are adorable, but new dog purchasers often do not realize the commitment they are making when they bring a puppy home. For those want the companionship of Westies dogs, but do not have the knowledge or patience to endure the training process, rescuing an older Westie dog may be the right alternative.

When considering an older West highland terrier dog, the first thing that many people think is that they would be getting a dog with problems, either genetic problems common to Westies, or behavioral problems from improper training. The truth is, many Westie dogs go to shelters for reasons that have nothing to do with the dogs’ inherent qualities. Every year, dog owners die, move to retirement homes, change jobs, get divorced, have new babies, or, unfortunately, simply tire of the responsibility of caring for a dog.

The advantages of older dogs are many. They have already finished teething, and no longer feel the urge to chew holes in your shoes, rugs, and furniture. Westie dogs that are older have grown used to sleeping through the night while their people sleep, as opposed to westie puppies, who wake up and whine. Older pets will have already been housetrained and also should know the meaning of the word ‘no,’ making their continued training that much easier.

When you encounter a Westie puppy, you only have the breed standards to give you an idea of what kind of dog it will grow into. Although Westhighland dogs have a typical personality type, there are variations from dog to dog. The full-grown Westie is a know quantity. The Westie dog you meet is what you will get, and you can quickly determine if it will fit into your home.

It may seem like rescuing an older Westie provides you with an ‘instant dog,’ but that is not the case. At first they might become confused, upon arriving at a new home, and need to be reminded of their basic training. However, even allowing a few weeks of extra special care is easier and less stressful than the rigors of training a puppy.

Do you want a Westie as a pet? What are your expectations? What do you know about the breed? You take time out to know these answers. Knowing your motives and being sufficiently educated about the breed, is key to getting the dog that?s right for you. It will also guide you in picking the right breeder, from the many West Highland White breeders around.

Your breeder should:

1. Be a member to the following: the West Highland White Terrier Club of America, a regional Westie club, or an all-breed club. Membership to all these organizations is ideal, but it?s not a strict requirement. It does indicate that they are committed to knowing all there is for the breed, and responsibilities attached.

2. Be concerned about what kind of buyer you are, and to whom they sell their dogs. This is a good indication that the breeder isn?t after a quick profit but genuinely concerned in doing what is right for both the dog and you.

3. Will allow you access to the puppy, so you can have this examined by a veterinarian. The veterinarian is a reliable third party who can give you the real situation with regards to health of the puppy. It also gives both you and the breeder, the assurance about the condition of the puppy upon sale.

4. Willingly give you references about their clientele list, names of other breeders and the veterinarians who provide care for these dogs.

5. Be knowledgeable about the breed, because buying a Westie is not the end of it. You?ll still need expert advice when it comes to such problems as health, feeding or even socialization issues. A dedicated breeder who?ll remind you to return the dog to them, should you decide to not to keep it, later on.

6. Be able to show you a kennel that is clean, puppies that are friendly and playful.

7. Provide you a complete record of the dates and types of vaccinations and worming done, feeding instructions for your puppy.

8. Provide you a written contract and/or conditions of sale for the puppy.

9. Give you a ?blue slip?; this is the application to register the puppy in your own name with the American Kennel Club (AKC). If its? not available during the time of sale, request that the breeder state on a dated, signed receipt of payment that the application will be sent to you as soon as possible.

Your relationship with the breeder of your West Highland Terrier is not a one time sale, it continues until the death of your pet; it makes great sense to have rapport between you and your breeder.

?Westies? or Westhighland Terriers are furry coated dogs, with dots for coal black eyes and button noses.

Why are Westie puppies sought after by many dog lovers? Because these friendly creatures are well-behaved, loyal and affectionate dogs, who may be pocket sized (average a 10-11 inches tall), but are highly intelligent animals.

You won?t have a hard time training these westie terriers, whether solely as house pets, or for show. Their keen intelligence makes it seem like play. However, they learn better and best to training sessions that are done on a schedule.

Just like children, west highland terrier puppies learn through play. Playing games with your west highland white terrier pups creates an opportunity to train them to obey your commands, gives them valuable exercise, and helps to build their strength, coordination, and agility. It is also fun for everyone.

Before you start playing games, there are some rules you should know, and safety precautions you should take. Your pups need to really run, not just walk on a leash, but be sure any area you play in has a fence. If they are city dogs, try finding a fenced-in tennis court for play. As a last resort, keep the puppy on an extra-long line. You do not want them to wander free until you are certain they will return on your command.

Brush their white coats two to three times a week, to keep it shiny and clean. If you do intend to enter them for competition, make sure your pet is regularly trimmed, plucked and stripped of his or her coat.

Good and reputable West Highland Terrier breeders will tell you that a Westie lives an average of 15 years and usually has a litter of two to five puppies.

What is the history behind the Terrier breed? This breed originated in Scotland developed in the high mountains of West Scotland, to hunt vermin. They claim a common ancestry to the Scotch Terrier.

References to the existence can be seen as early as the 18th century, like one painting done by Sir Edwin Landseer. The piece entitled The Breakfast Party clearly features the West Highland Terriers.

Another name is as the Poltalloch terrier. The name refers to the home of Col. E.D. Malkolm, the first breeder of these breed. In 1907, the breed then registered as the Roseneath terrier, little Skye and Cairn. Then in 1909, AKC officially changed the breed?s name to what it is known as today, West Highland White Terrier breed.

In the past White Terriers, were considered to belong to the one breed, with Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Cairn and Scottish Terriers. However, although they share common ancestors, selective breeding resulted in the differences between their coat type and colors.

A surprising fact about this breed is, given that it was originally bred to traipse the steep and rugged mountain sides, Westies are well adjusted to today’s living conditions. As long as they are walked several times a day, they are good apartment dwellers.

Have you ever held any Westie puppies? These tiny creatures are cuddly and white furry balls, at least 12-15 inches tall, possessing a pair of coal black eyes and snubbed nose. They look fragile and needful of your protection and care. This is deceiving, for they were initially bred to hunt vermin and are intelligent hunters.

Historically the ?Westies? or Westhighland Terriers were bred in the high mountains of west Scotland and claims ancestry to the Scotch Terrier.

Is it easy to acquire any of these Westies? pups? No, you?ll need to be mindful that West Highland Terrier breeders are selective with whom they?ll place their puppies. Only dog lovers with an extensive understanding of this breed?s need for extensive grooming and exercise are considered.

While many dog owners who own Westie pups know they don?t come cheap, the joy, loyalty and love these dogs have give are worth it.

In ending, it?s not that hard to see then that the Westhighland Terriers definitely qualify as one of man?s best friends.
